Horses in Poland 2026: key figures

English summary of the Polish report "Konie i stajnie w Polsce 2026" (Horses and stables in Poland 2026). Data as of 11 October 2026. The full report, maps and CSV files are in Polish.

  1. About 267,000 horses are in the official register. On 30 September 2026 the state animal register (IRZplus), kept by the Agency for Restructuring and Modernisation of Agriculture (ARiMR), held 269,254 equids, including 266,623 horses at 50,836 registered holdings. This is about 70% more than the 2023 survey of Statistics Poland (GUS), which counted only horses on agricultural holdings (157,620).

  2. Horses on farms fell by half. GUS counted 312,139 horses on agricultural holdings in 2005 and 157,620 in 2023.

  3. Farm statistics do not cover all horses. The ARiMR register holds about 109,000 more horses than the 2023 GUS survey. The data do not show where these horses are kept.

  4. A larger share of inspected operators had irregularities. In 2017-2023, 10.8% to 13.4% of inspected operators keeping equids (persons or businesses under veterinary supervision) had at least one irregularity; in 2024 it was 16.9% and in 2025 16.3%. The figures cover all types of veterinary inspection, not only welfare, and inspections are not random, so they do not describe all stables.

  5. Exports go mainly to Italy. Italy accounted for 81% of the value of Polish exports of horses, asses and mules (customs heading CN 0101) in 2015-2025, almost entirely horses for slaughter. Imports fell from 706 horses in 2023 to 215 in 2025.

  6. Most horses per inhabitant are in the east. Podlaskie, Lubelskie and Warmińsko-Mazurskie have the most horses per 10,000 inhabitants, according to the GUS figure for 2025. GUS has not explained the source of its 2025 horse count, so the change from 2023 should not be read as real growth.
